LightSail Integrates Lexile Measures Into Their Award-Winning Literacy Platform

DURHAM, NC — September 17, 2013 — MetaMetrics®, developer of the Lexile® Framework for Reading, and LightSail Education®, a creator of digital literacy solutions, today announced that the LightSail, an adaptive literacy platform for K-12 students, now provides Lexile® measures for both readers and books. The platform provides educators the ability to tailor reading instruction based on student ability, as well as measure student reading growth through the use of Lexile measures, the most widely adopted measure of reading ability and text complexity in the country.

LightSail’s Common Core State Standards-aligned reading and writing platform uses complex texts, authentic assessments, social media, data analysis and scaffolding tools to promote rapid growth in student literacy. Lexile technology is embedded throughout the platform. Lexile measures are offered for an ever growing library to help differentiate instruction and personalize the student reading experience. Student performance from reading assessments is also reported out as Lexile measures, enabling educators to monitor student progress towards college- and career-readiness markers as outlined in the Common Core State Standards. Later this fall, LightSail will provide students and educators with a Lexile-based tool to forecast reading growth.

“Lexile measures are foundational to our reading platform,” said LightSail Education CEO Gideon Stein. “The theory behind the Lexile Framework reflects many of our guiding principles, specifically to help facilitate deliberate practice and provide accurate, actionable measures of growth. This invaluable, real-time guidance is critical for educators implementing the Common Core.”

LightSail’s literacy platform enables schools at every level of achievement to provide their students the skills to meet the literacy standards needed for college- and career-readiness. In recognition of LightSail’s pioneering innovation in the digital literacy space, the company recently took top honors in the Literacy Courseware Challenge and received a $500,000 grant from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and was named best new ed tech start-up at SXSW V2V.

“LightSail is a revolutionary literacy platform that is gaining national attention and honors. If we as a country are going to meet the ambitious goals of the Common Core State Standards, it will be through the use of adaptive, proven literacy platforms like LightSail,” said MetaMetrics President Malbert Smith. “We are excited Lexile measures are built into this revolutionary product.”
