NWEA and MetaMetrics Expand 19-Year Partnership for MAP Assessments

Elementary school students in their classroom.

MAP results will now include both Lexile and Quantile measures, providing powerful data to differentiate ELA and math instruction and to monitor growth

Durham, NC. – September 10, 2018NWEA®, the not-for-profit provider of assessment solutions, and MetaMetrics®, developer of the widely adopted Lexile Framework® for Reading and Quantile Framework® for Mathematics, today announced that they have expanded their 19-year partnership to include both Lexile and Quantile measures with student MAP assessment results. The expanded partnership will provide additional data to help educators assess students’ achievement and growth in language arts and mathematics, and to differentiate instruction.

NWEA and MetaMetrics have been partners since 1999, when NWEA added Lexile® measures to its MAP Growth Reading and MAP Growth Language reports. With this expansion, NWEA is providing Quantile® measures with MAP Growth Math results, and incorporating Lexile measures into MAP Reading Fluency.

MAP Growth provides a precise measure of a K-12 student’s academic achievement and growth. A computer-adaptive assessment, it adjusts to each student’s responses to provide personalized results about what each student knows, is able to do, and is ready to learn next—whether on, above, or below grade level. Teachers receive immediate and actionable information in easy-to-use reports to help differentiate instruction for students in need of remediation and those high performers requiring additional enrichment. Because MAP Growth tracks individual student growth over time, it can help predict each student’s proficiency and college readiness.

MAP Reading Fluency is the first computer-adaptive, automatically scored K-3 oral reading assessment; it eliminates the need for one-on-one, teacher-student administration. The groundbreaking 20-minute assessment of oral reading fluency, comprehension, and foundational reading skills is delivered online, enabling group administration and saving teachers hours of time.

The Quantile Framework uses a common, developmental scale to measure student mathematics achievement and help teachers target mathematics instruction for each student’s specific needs. Similarly, the Lexile Framework uses a common scale to measure student reading ability and the difficulty of text, enabling teachers to choose reading materials targeted for each student’s current learning needs.

“NWEA is focused on providing teachers with data they can use to help all their students learn, and we have seen how schools and districts value the alignment of Lexile and MAP measures,” said Chris Minnich, CEO, NWEA. “We are excited to expand our relationship with MetaMetrics by offering Quantile measures so teachers can more easily and quickly identify resources appropriate for each child.”

“By expanding our partnership to include both Lexile and Quantile measures to MAP Growth reports, educators will have additional data to help connect students with resources and instruction to best support their current learning needs,” said Malbert Smith III, Ph.D., MetaMetrics president and co-founder.

MAP Growth is noted for its stable, equal-interval cross-grade scale and the accurate, valid, and reliable data it provides. This interim assessment provides nationally representative norms derived from more than 10 million students in the U.S.

MAP Growth, MAP Skills, and MAP Reading Fluency comprise the MAP Suite from NWEA, a comprehensive assessment system with multiple ways to utilize assessment to improve instruction.
