Pearson Partners With MetaMetrics to Offer Quantile® Measures of Student Math Capability and Progress in aimswebPlus

Popular Mathematics Metric Will Be Used to Monitor Student Progress in K–8 Tool

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (April 13, 2016) — Today at the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics (NCTM) 2016 Conference, Pearson, the world’s learning company, announced the expansion of its partnership with MetaMetrics®, developer of The Quantile® Framework for Mathematics, to provide Quantile measures in its new aimswebPlus™ system. aimswebPlus will report Quantile measures to assist teachers in measuring student math capability and monitoring student progress in mathematics.

Pearson first partnered with MetaMetrics in 2011 to integrate Lexile® measures to AIMSweb, the company’s 15-year-old learning assessment. Lexile measures, a metric for reading ability and text complexity, are used in AIMSweb to monitor reading growth and help students find books that match their unique reading abilities.

aimswebPlus is an innovative new assessment, data management and reporting system for students in kindergarten through grade 8. Students will receive Quantile measures from the assessment component of aimswebPlus beginning in the fall of 2016 that will enhance progress monitoring for teachers. Quantile measures reported from aimswebPlus will also help teachers, parents and students accelerate learning by providing access to free, targeted resources on Quantiles.com, including more than 80,000 lessons from more than 600 textbooks and 3,100 online and downloadable resources that are aligned with the Quantile scale.

“Pearson’s aimsweb products are a proven success in thousands of schools nationwide,” said Malbert Smith, Ph.D., president, CEO and co-founder of MetaMetrics. “Quantile measures being used in a consequential RTI solution like aimswebPlus allow teachers to identify gaps in knowledge and connect students with resources that advance student learning.”

The Quantile Framework measures two important aspects of learning — the learner and what is being learned. The Quantile student measure describes what the student is capable of understanding. The Quantile skill or concept measure describes the difficulty, or demand, in learning that skill or concept. Both measures are represented as a number followed by the letter Q (i.e. 640Q) on the Quantile Scale. The Quantile Framework accurately matches students with instructional materials by measuring both mathematical capability and the complexity of mathematical skills and concepts on the same developmental scale. Quantile measures can help improve mathematics teaching and learning by helping teachers target instruction and determine if students are on track to pass year-end assessments and succeed in college and careers.

“With Quantile measures integrated into aimswebPlus, this new suite of assessments will provide teachers with even more critical insights into student progress that can be mapped to intervention solutions to accelerate success,” said Alistair Van Moere, Ph.D., head of Pearson’s Assessment Product Solutions group.

Used by thousands of school districts around the country, aimsweb is an assessment, data management and reporting system. Designed to universally screen and monitor student progress, aimsweb uses brief, valid, and reliable measures of reading, math, language arts and behavior. With aimswebPlus, teachers will have a new suite of assessments more closely aligned with standards along with the ability to administer a battery of measures that yields additional reporting information to inform instruction.
