Bringing Meaning to Measurement
The Lexile® Framework for Reading
The Lexile Framework for Reading measures reading ability and text complexity on the same developmental scale. Unlike other measurement systems, the Lexile Framework for Reading determines reading ability based on actual assessments, rather than generalized age or grade levels.
Today Lexile® measures are recognized in the United States and around the world as the standard for matching readers with texts. Over 35 million U.S. students from all 50 states — more than half of the country’s K-12 students — receive Lexile measures every year. More than 65 popular reading assessments and programs and half of all state assessments report Lexile measures. And when a student has a Lexile measure, they can be matched with the more than 100 million articles, books and websites that have Lexile text measures, putting them on the path to success in school, college and careers.
The Lexile® Framework for Oral Reading
Accurate measurement of students’ oral reading ability is important as oral reading is a strong predictor of reading comprehension, an essential academic and life skill. The Lexile® Framework for Oral Reading is a scientific approach to measuring both students’ oral reading ability and the oral readability of text on the same Lexile scale. This results in two types of Lexile measures: the Lexile oral reading measure for students and the Lexile oral readability measure for text passages.
El Sistema Lexile® para Leer
Like its English-language counterpart, El Sistema Lexile para Leer provides its own developmental scale and measures to connect Spanish readers with resources at the right level of difficulty and in their native language. Spanish Lexile measures help educators, librarians and parents select targeted materials and activities that can improve reading ability and monitor reading growth in school, the library and at home. Spanish Lexile measures are available from a growing number of reading assessments and programs, and the number of resources with Spanish Lexile measures continues to increase.
The Quantile® Framework for Mathematics
The creation of the Quantile Framework for Mathematics was born out of the realization that there is the same wide range of student abilities in most math classes as there is in reading classes. Recognizing that one size does not fit all, our researchers built the Quantile Framework for Mathematics. Like Lexile measures, Quantile® measures allow students and tasks, skills and concepts to be placed on the same scale. By providing a common scale on which the measurement of students’ math skills, as well as all math content can be placed, provides the critical link for supporting personalized learning in math. Quantile measures take the guesswork out of instruction for educators by describing which mathematical skills and concepts the student has learned and is ready to learn.
