About Spanish Lexile® Measures for Reading

Today’s classrooms often include several students — sometimes many more — who speak languages other than English. Spanish-speaking students are now the second-largest student population enrolled in public schools, and it can be challenging to measure progress and find appropriate reading materials for children whose first language is Spanish.

El Sistema Lexile® para Leer is a reading framework for Spanish readers and text. In the same way educators use The Lexile® Framework for Reading, Spanish Lexile Measures for Reading can be used to match students with targeted Spanish-language materials. This helps students keep up when their first language isn’t English.

For example, in a lesson on the Battle of Gettysburg, a teacher or librarian could use students’ Spanish Lexile measures to connect them with ability-appropriate, supplemental materials on the topic, keeping them on track to meet state performance standards while strengthening their reading skills in their native language.
