Lexile Reader Measures

Each year, over 35 million Lexile reader measures are reported worldwide from more than 60 popular reading assessments and state programs.

At MetaMetrics®, we don’t create those assessments. We work with our state departments of education partners and the best test publishers in the world. We either help them create new assessments or link their existing assessments to report student reading scores as Lexile measures.

Lexile Text Measures

Matching a student’s Lexile reader measure to a Lexile text measure is what makes the measures actionable and accelerates student achievement. Educators and parents can personalize learning by matching students with materials that meet and challenge each individual’s reading ability.

A book, article or piece of text receives a Lexile text measure when it’s analyzed by MetaMetrics. A student whose Lexile reader measure is 940L experiences the greatest growth when matched with materials with a Lexile text measure that ranges from 840L to 990L — most targeted reading occurs with a range of 100L below to 50L above a student’s Lexile measure. At the higher end of the range, students will be challenged, but not frustrated, because the reading materials are still within their ability.

We partner with more than 200 publishing companies and have measured more than 275,000 books. We also partner with the nation’s largest periodical database service providers, including EBSCO, GALE and ProQuest, to provide Lexile measures for newspaper and magazine articles, as well as encyclopedia and reference content. Through these partnerships, more than 100 million articles and websites have Lexile measures.
