About Lexile® Measures for Reading

The Lexile® Framework for Reading is a scientific approach to measuring both reading ability and the text complexity of reading materials on the same developmental scale. When you use Lexile reader measures and Lexile text measures together, you can help each student as an individual learner, rather than the vague categories of below-grade, on-grade or above-grade.

Key to Success: Using Student Lexile Reading Measures & Text Measures Together

Educators use Lexile reading measures and text measures together by connecting students with reading materials within their Lexile range. Materials are in the reading comprehension “sweet spot“ when they are 100L below to 50L above their reported Lexile measure. Because there are so many materials with Lexile text measures, it’s easy to find reading materials across the curriculum that will provide an ideal level of challenge while maintaining comprehension.
