Lexile and Quantile Measures Now Included in Pearson's PRoPL Interim Assessments

Delivers precise, actionable student insights to educators throughout the school year

DURHAM, NC— (October 24, 2023)MetaMetrics®, developer of the Lexile® Framework for Reading and the Quantile® Framework for Mathematics, and Pearson, the world’s learning company, announced the expansion of their relationship to provide Lexile® and Quantile® measures for grades K-12 through Pearson Review of Progress and Learning (PRoPL), a group of three standards-based tests students take throughout the year to measure their progress toward meeting year-end goals.

Over thirty-five million students receive Lexile and Quantile measures through state summative testing and our partners, empowering educators and families with actionable data. Lexile measures provide a scientific approach for matching students with ability-appropriate text and audio resources. Quantile measures help educators to differentiate instruction and match students with the math skills and concepts they are ready to learn. Both Lexile and Quantile measures are used to monitor growth, putting students on the path to success in school, college and careers.

“Lexile and Quantile measures being used in a growth-monitoring solution like PRoPL provide teachers with real-time information about student learning so they can connect learners with resources that advance growth toward reaching their academic goals,” said Malbert Smith, Ph.D., CEO and co-founder of MetaMetrics.

PRoPL tests are quick assessments typically administered in the fall, winter, and spring that offer educators immediate feedback on student strengths and areas for needed support. The newly added Lexile and Quantile student measures provide insight into individual student reading and math ability and then match students to free, targeted instructional resources available in the Lexile® and Quantile® Hub.

The Lexile and Quantile Frameworks measure two important aspects of learning — the individual learner and the content that is being used. The Lexile and Quantile student measures describe what the student is capable of understanding. The Lexile and Quantile content measures describe the difficulty, or demand, in reading materials or math concepts being taught. Lexile and Quantile measures can help improve reading and mathematics growth by helping teachers target instruction and determine if students are on track to meet year-end grade-level expectations.

“With Lexile and Quantile measures integrated into PRoPL, our new suite of interim assessments gives teachers even more critical insights into student progress that can be mapped to instruction,” said Trent Workman senior vice president for Pearson Assessments. “PRoPL was developed by Pearson experts with decades of assessment experience; the tests are rigorous and highly aligned to each state’s academic standards for a truer picture of growth towards end-of-year goals. Plus, they’re short—we aimed to minimize testing time to get kids back to learning.”

PRoPL is part of a comprehensive suite of assessments for K-12 reading and math. PRoPL assessments for writing, science, and social studies, as well as accommodated forms, such as Braille and large print, will launch in the 2024-25 school year. PRoPL is unique in its offering of interim assessments for all four major subject areas. In addition, PRoPL integrates with Pearson’s full suite of classroom assessment tools, including our Navvy Classroom assessment for formative use and aimswebPlus™ for screening and progress monitoring.
