The Landscape of American School English Project is a long-term and multi-faceted research endeavor with three primary purposes:

  1. To identify the words and phrases that U.S. students are likely to encounter in grades K-12.
  2. To identify sets of words that are likely candidates for instruction.
  3. To make this information available to other researchers, curriculum developers, publishers and policy makers as they engage in research and development efforts to improve vocabulary curricula and vocabulary instruction in U.S. schools.

As research progresses, MetaMetrics® is releasing selected results free for non-commercial use to any interested parties. At this time, we are making available word frequency lists by grade for elementary school texts in reading, science, math and social studies.
